RESUMO

In order to understand the Antologia Nacional (1895-1969) by Fausto Barreto and Carlos de Laet, a school selection used for more than seventy years, a historical study of Portuguese Language and Literature instruction in Brazilian secondary school was carried out, taking as reference the Teaching Programs of Colegio Pedro II (a model Brazilian secondary school) and the appropriate teaching legistlation. Until 1931, the completion of a secondary education was not obligatory to begin a superior education; selection for the latter was carried out through "Preparatory Examinations". This meant that, in practice, the curriculum for secondary school courses was dependent on these examintaions. Until 1869 Portuguese language instruction was insignificant in the secondary school curriculum, where the classics, above all Latin, prevailed. After 1869, when a Portuguese language examination was included in the Preparatory Examinations, Portuguese language instruction rose in importance among the disciplines at Colegio Pedro II; the development of these disciplines was constant, albeit subject to variations. ...
