RESUMO

This paper examines a contemporary urban theory named New Urbanism that first started in the 1980âs in the United States. Central to this theory is the elaboration of principles and rules which affect accessibility, land use and establish specific configurations of a new type of settlement. The objective of this research is to verify in what level the urban projects based on the principles and rules of the New Urbanism contributes to social interaction and the rescue of community life. Hence, the spatial configurations of three new urbanist projects were analyzed, in order to identify its implications in the natural movement of pedestrians and the use of these spaces. This study is based on the Theory of the Social Logic of Space (HILLIER &HANSON; 1984). Based on its results it is possible to infer that the new urbanist projects adhere to the requirements of its theory, as long as they are based on certain morphologic properties, such as integration, itelligibility and synergy
