RESUMO

The Centro de Geologia Eschwege (CGE), created in Diamantina-MG in 1969, researches the geology of the southern Serra do Espinhaço (SEm) and supports educational activities related to geological mapping. In special, since 1970, it has offered field training to geology undergraduate students of Brazilian universities. The thesis describes this teaching practice and aims to identify the influence exerted by geological models of SEm on teaching, particularly concerning the field of Sedimentology-Stratigraphy. The description and the theoretical problematization of this teaching in the last 30 years aim to contribute to the understanding of the role of field practice in geology research and education. This research was based on qualitative with empirical analysis of documental sources. Case study was used as a strategy to generate exploratory insights and to guide data selection and organization. Field description, reports and maps drawn by students, research reports, technical scientific works and normative and administrative documents were the main documental sources. The analysis of the textual and pictorial narrative of the reports aimed to evidence: the objectives attained by teaching; the relation established by field teaching and scientific models; the concepts, procedures and representations used in the characterization of the geological units; the technical and intellectual abilities used in data survey and analysis; the constitutive elements of the visual language and its articulation with the narrative and the explaining models. A total of 184 reports concerning 623 students from 19 geology courses under a two-week field practice in the years of 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 were analyzed. The analysis evidences relations between field teaching and the methodological characteristics of the scientific and professional practice of the geologist. The activity is strongly based on the observation and selection of significant features in the scale adopted, the description and interpretation of the features, and on data representation. Field practice combines the didactic training function, fostering abilities related to geologic mapping, and the investigative function, which involves the identification and the definition of strategies to solve problems. The didactic transposition promotes the transformation of the conceptual and methodological contents derived from the scientific practice into teaching. These contents have been divulged and incorporated into the formation of many generations of Brazilian geologists. Created due to the convergence of interests of its idealizer and the needs of the geology courses to offer field formation, CGE has rightfully become a mediating institution between the production of scientific knowledge on the geology of SEm and geology field teaching
