RESUMO

This paper aims at investigating the effects of the learning strategy instruction to the development of the speaking skill with a group from third level learners of English from Curso de Letras at the Federal University of Pará. This investigation aims at contributing to a better understanding of the issues involved in learning difficulties related to learners speaking performance in using a foreign language by suggesting that the explicit instruction of strategies can provide more effective learning. Hence, it offers teachers a new perspective from which to view these issues in the classroom. This study was carried out within the learning strategies framework which is based on cognitive theory of learning and development.
