RESUMO

This research is the result of my interest in the elderly social issue which involves a personal and family experience. One of its main purposes is to verify the representation and identity features of old people in their discourse as well as in the discourse of people who live with them, including the discourses which are presented by the press and established in the legal provisions to protect the elderly. The methodological and theoretical approach is what is known as the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), based mainly in approaches to Chouliaraki &Fairclough (1999) and Fairclough (1992 and 2003). Action, representation and identification will also be emphasized. The theoretical reference will be based also on Thompson (1995) and Foucault (2004, 2006 and 2007), in what power and ideology are concerned; Silva (2000), Giddens (2002) and Hall (2005) in analyzing identity; Halliday (1985;1994), Halliday &Hasan (1989) e Halliday &Matthiessen (2004), in Systemic Functional Linguistics approach; Koch (2005, the 2006a and 2006b), in what Modality and argumentation are concerned; and Van Leeuwen (1997), in considering the modes of representation which can be found in the text. The methodology used for data generation is the qualitative research and the methods are semistructured and narrative interviews. The research material was extracted from the Elderly Law and from press news about the violence against elderly, and also from statements made by an old woman and by a caretaker. The research reveals identity characteristics of dependency, weakness and oppression. From the analyses we can conclude that the discourse about the elderly is, mostly, ideological, since it reinforces beliefs and hegemonic values of capitalism, which reduce the importance of people who lost their productive capacity. In spite of the Elderly Law establishing rights and guarantees to the elderly, its recommendations do not work in practice, because of the feeling that the elderly are inferior human beings in comparison to the young people.
