RESUMO

This research carried out the survey and analysis of metaphorical expressions related of the word teacher throughout a corpus built from the compilation of ten-year editions of Revista Nova Escola. The main theorectical underpinning for this study is provided by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980/2002) as well as Corpus Linguistics, which uses natural data for linguistic analysis, under a probabilistical language approach. According to Lakoff e Johnson, the conceptual metaphor emerges from interactions held in a bio-social-cultural-historical macrocontext shared by a group of individuals. The authors stress that one cannot act in the world without transforming it or being transformed by it. Under this theory, the metaphor is seen as an interactional cognitive resource between superior psychological processes (communication, language, reasoning etc.) and the environment and/or context; based on such interaction, individual and social knowledge is built, generating common conceptualizations to the entire group. The results detected metaphorical expressions associated to the word teacher such as: TEACHER IS CANDIDATE IN A CONTEST, TEACHER IS THE KEY PIECE OF A STRUCTURE, TEACHER IS ACTOR and TEACHER IS SPORTSMAN/WOMAN. The analysis of the metaphorical expressions indicate that Nova Escola magazine builds professors, both in metaphorical and literal ways, by means of expressions bearing social status, differently from teachers at junior and senior high schools, whose image literal and metaphoric is built under generic and devaluated conditions
