RESUMO

In Brazil, social housing areas can be described as urban islands, with poor relations to the existing urban network. These areas create the city?s outskirts as homogeneous landscapes, which are repetitive, monotonous and disconnected. In this scenario show that there is a close relationship between the urban lot configuration and dimension and the quality of low income housing, especially concerning environment comfort, urban context and the general well being and cultural psychological values of users. Real-estate agents exert pressure on public administrations and institutions to reduce urban parameters, such as street profiles and the minimum lot area. The reduction of the lot area, therefore, directly affects the design possibilities of houses, the quality of the home, the neighborhood, the town and life of its inhabitants. For these reasons, this study had as a goal to identify and analyze the types and the configuration of popular urban subdivisions, their legislation and the resulting housing. In order to analyze this scenario of urban subdivisions and the effects on housing a literature search was undertaken and data was collected on specific legislation of low income or popular subdivisions, configurations of housing areas, sitting conditions, permitted topographies and norms relating to street patterns as well as housing needs were investigated. A case study was conducted in the city of Limeira in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, to verify the interference of size and configuration of the urban lot on the house itself. It was searched in this study three popular urban subdivisions, which were created in different time, with different urban characteristic, size and configuration of the urban lot. As a result, guidelines were developed which are easily accessible and specific for social housing areas. These recommendations will contribute toward a better quality of life for the low-income population and the urban design of cities
