RESUMO

This dissertation intends to understand the role played by the French photographer turned into an ethnographer Pierre Verger (2002-1996) as a contributor to the efforts of artists, writers and scholars in mid-20th century Bahia aiming at creating and circulating a local Afro-brazilian identity ethnically understood as of Yoruba origin. Vergers photographs, instead of abstract and desimbodied features, offer a deeply territorialized vision of Bahias identity,
