RESUMO

This research was held among Physical Education academics and the beneficiaries of a Public Health Program oriented towards adults supposedly healthy or with cronic degenerative disease. The aim is to study what knowledge dimension and technical abilities should be emphasized in the academic formation of physical education professionals, as well as to produce a pedagogical training strategy by applying the operational group technique, in which study subjects focus on the task of exchanging experiences and evaluating their participation in this area. With a view to a better understanding of the participants’ experiences, a quantitative-qualitative research was carried out by means of the action research methodology, in which all persons involved interact in search for solutions to problems that were previously identified through a situational diagnosis. Thus, data were collected by means of four evaluation instruments, whose results identified that Risk Factors, Evaluation, Physical Fitness Tests and Physical Education Planning in health promotion programs are the trigger issues perceived as most wanting for the cognitive dimensions of Physical Education in relation to Health. In the second phase of this innovating self-training strategy, discussions were held in participative meetings, in which conflicting efforts and feelings were observed with respect to the academic formation process and the relative Professional Qualification standard. With a view to minimizing the most problematic tasks, the author proposes improvements in didactical resources, communication, information, political actions and, mainly, in the valuation and academic awareness about the importance of physical exercise in public health programs and people’s quality of life.
