RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to compare the behavior of full-term infants small-for-gestational age (SGA) with full-term infants appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) , in the first months of life. This research design was double-blind prospective observational case-control study. Ethical permission was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of the School of Medicine Science of State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The neonates were selected at the Center of Integral Attention to the Woman s Health (CAISM-UNICAMP). Entry criteria two days after birth; infants living in Campinas metropolitan area; full-term neonates (37-41 weeks); expected birth weight less than 10th percentile for the SGA group and birth between 25th and 90th percentile for the AGA group. Infants with genetic syndromes, multiple congenital malformations and verified congenital were exclued. Forty-six infants carne back for the assessment. The sample for the transverse study consisted of 31 infants in the 1st month; 33 in the 2nd and 34 in the 3rd month. For the longitudinal cohort were considered 20 infants in the 1st month, 2nd and 3rd month. The Bayley Scales of Infant Oevelopment 11 (BISO-li) were ministrated, with emphasis in the Behavior Rate Scale (BRS). The data were registered in a data base of the Epidemiological Information Program (EPI-INFO version 6.2). The Statistical Analysis System (SAS) was used for statistical tests. The adopted significance levei was 0.05. In the transverse cohort in the 1st month, the SGA group showed better values in the Index Score (IS) of the Mental Scale and in the Raw Score (RS) of the BRS, despite of no significant difference. In the 2nd month it was found that SGA infants showed lower average values, with a trend to significant difference in the Mental IS and significant difference in the Motor IS and BRS RS. The Attention/Arousal Factor and Motor Quality Factor displayed significantly lower average values in SGA group, in the itens gross-motor movement required by tasks, control of movements, soothability when upset, energy, exploration of objects and/or and in the Motor Quality Factor, in the itens: hypertonicity, tremulousness. The longitudinal cohort has also verified the same results the transversal study
