RESUMO
This dissertation discusses a contemporary cultural phenomenon: sexual harassment. It aims to identify representations of man and woman in films such as Disclosure, Oleanna and Besieged, and compares these representations to those constructed in codes of conduct and booklets on the matter, in an effort to determine to what extent the constructs of these two sets of texts correspond. The study aims to discover the semiotic mechanisms involved in the construction of such representations and the ideological contents they convey. The hypothesis of this study is that the imaginary which gives rise to the creation of booklets and codes of conduct designed to regulate relations between the genders and to prevent abuses of power includes two distinct gender characterizations: one of women as romantic beings with untouchable bodies who are the objects of desire, courtship, siege and conquest; and the other of powerful and domineering men, whose desire for conquest often leads them to defy the law by relying on their power to persuade and seduce. These exact stereotypes are thought to be built into the films at issue. There are no studies on sexual harassment in the area of communications to date. Therefore, this study serves as an interface between two areas of research in communications: messages and the context of messages. The codes of conduct, booklets and films are analyzed from the point of view of their potential effects of meaning, within a specific context: work relations in companies at the beginning of the 21st century. Psychoanalytic notions such as male/female polarity, castration, and gaze as a drive circuit are employed to clarify some of the psychological mechanisms involved in sexual harassment which are essential to understanding the representations built into these texts
