RESUMO

The present study is exploratory and descriptive with a qualitative approach of the data. Its proposal is to investigate nurse performance at the Psychosocial Care Center (PCC); describe the activities performed by nurses in PCC I, II, and III; identify the facilities and limits that nurses come across to develop his/her activities in this kind of service. Data collection took place through semistructured interviews with 11 professionals, using a pre-elaborated script. The latter were fully recorded and transcribed by the researcher. In the analysis and discussion of the collected data, the following stages were used: data ordering, data classification, and final analysis in the articulation of the theoretical and empiric material. Thus, from each statement, themes emerging from the intervieweesreports were extracted and grouped into two thematic categories: nursing care, and the easy and difficult aspects they deal with to perform his/her activities in the PCC. The results point out that most of the participants has previous experience in other mental health care services, before entering the PCC. Regarding specific education in mental health, it was verified that more than half the nurses have a specialization degree in psychiatric nursing. The average time of work in the selected equipment is three years and seven months. The results indicate that nurses perform direct care activities through group and individual actions. For the nurses, the easy aspects regarding their work in the service are: affinity with the mental health area, and team coordination and meetings. The difficulties mentioned by the nurses are: the indolence of nursing auxiliaries and the absence or little therapeutic support to professionals. Some nurses pointed issues related to teamwork and to service structure and dynamics as facilitators, while others stated them as limitations.
