RESUMO

This dissertation describes the characteristics of the "Núcleo Colonial Campos Salles. This was an official nucleus of immigrant colonization, created and administered by the government of São Paulo State in the region of Campinas, in 1897. In the year 1915, when it is emancipated from government administration, the nucleus gives birth to the current city of Cosmópolis. Thus, what was a nucleus with typical countryside characteristics becomes, little by little, an urban area, i.e. a new city in the state of São Paulo. In order to recover this nucleus, it was tried to use the research model proposed by Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz, in her work on the rural districts of São Paulo State and the relationships they had with nearby towns. Moreover, the study also examined issues related to European immigration in the state of São Paulo, the traditional rustic culture, the colonization of the region where you installed the nucleus and the history of the Funilense railway; railroad that served the nucleus. Finally, the documentary research on the nucleus was based on official reports produced by the administration of the nucleus, in reports of the Secretary of Agriculture and reports of Presidents of Provinces
