RESUMO

Altemative polymeric materiaIs were evaluated to substitute asbestos tissues, which are used as diaphragm in water electrolysis. These materiaIs must be resistant to alkaline medium, temperature above 100°C and oxygen in molecular formo. They must also be porous, in a way to not decrease the conductivity of the electrolyte toa much and they must have mechanical resistance. Selected polymers were submitted to four tests to evaluate their characteristics: lifetime, conductivity, resistance to oxidation and tensile strength. Weight and area variations were analyzed, as well as the increase of the ionic resistance of solution in presence of the polymers and the changes in their mechanical resistance. Tested materials were: poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS), poly (tetrafluorethylene) (pTFE), Nafion, polysulfone and asbestos coated with polysulfone. AlI these materiaIs had best performance than asbestos, specially PPS and PTFE. Polysulfone increased ionic resistance of the electrolyte, so, a blend was produced to increase the porosity
