RESUMO

To better understand the clinical and laboratory alterations caused by visceral leishmaniasis and the subsequent employment of clinical management of the disease, the records were analyzed of 163 patients treated between 1999 and 2005 at the University Hospital, UFMS, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The 0 to 9 year age-group represented 53.2% of all cases. The clinical signs and symptoms registered at admission showed small differences between adults and children and differences were also observed in the laboratory data of serum levels of urea, creatin, amylase, lipase, alkaline phosphate, ALT and AST. Patients with elevated creatin levels and/or proteinuria, and those treated with amphoterocin B, were seen to have 5.8, 9.6, 12 and 40 times the probability of maintaining high serum levels of creatin after treatment, indicating an impaired renal function.
