RESUMO

The musical identity can be understood as the synthesis of the essential musical elements that constitute the music of a group, and that turns it musically recognizable beyond other groups. In this study of the Afro-Brazilian culture, we intend to discuss the main aspects that form the musical identity of the Terno de Catopês de Nossa Senhora do Rosário do Mestre João Farias in Montes Claros-MG, which belongs to The Congado. The Congado is one of the richest Afro-Brazilian manifestations. The musical forms found in that culture demonstrate its own identital characteristics, elements that delineate its ritual form. Through bibliographical research and fieldwork, we observed the processes of transmission of the musical knowledge, the existence forms as the sacred in a Catholic popular party in devotion to Nossa Senhora do Rosário, São Benedito and the Divino Espírito Santo and the main features of the music making of that culture. Catopês, present instruments with specific emblems - membranofones and idiofones - and a peculiar rhythmic pattern. With devotion to the Catholic saints, this group inserts music in a religious context in a remembrance process to the coronations of African Kings. That amount of musical realizations, devotion, remembrance connected to a leader, the " Master ", turns out to be a " product " with its own values. Besides all those identital elements, constructers of the life and of the performance of the group, this study lectures on the sociocultural context that forms the manifestation, detailing moments from inside and outside the ritual with emphasis in the version told by the members of that culture. It is bringing to the descriptive corpus the speaker, classifying its concepts and punctuating its values.
