RESUMO

This study aims to analyze the existing contradictions between the official agenda and practical actions referred to the health of rural women. The field research took place in the District of Macaparana in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The data were obtained ITomthe female users ofthe Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS (The Country s Public Health System), as well as health professionals and local health services managers. The methodology used in this study case included interviewing and observation. The results show a wide gap between the govemments aims and practical results, as women s specific needs are left behind ITomthe practices of local health clinics/hospitals/centers. The idea of health as a right should be related to quality and quantity in services, in its materia1/subjectivedimensions, which were not found in the studies. SUS emphasis on information, education, integrality and participation with social control in health policies was not achieved. This study considers fundamental the emphasis in the gender issue in the formulationlconsolidation in health policies, in order to put in practice SUS objectives, in the current Brazilian panorama of widened gap between the poor and the rich. The implementation of SUS will be only possible through the recognition of the articulation ofhealth and gender. Health must be defended as a public good, a state obligation and as a right to men and women. SUS must emphasize the equality between genders, taking into account difrerences in morbidity and mortality ofboth men and women
