RESUMO

The development of new information and communication technologies has been allowing, in the past few decades, great advance in society, in a general way. In scientific community, technologies have been playing an ultimate role, mainly, because they have enabled the production and broadcasting of scientific periodicals in electronic form. Consequently, the advent of this new format of scientific periodicals has brought consequences for the Brazilian university libraries, more particularly, in respect to the practice of collections development made by librarians. The aim of the present work is to assess the changes in the practice of collections development of scientific periodicals occurring in libraries of the Brazilian institutions of the highest level of education which run a postgraduate program in Information Science. The research has investigated qualitative and quantitative aspects of the problem, collecting data through interview, survey and statistical evaluation of the collection available in the CAPES Portal of Journals, as well as the material kept by the libraries selected for the sample. Results suggest that, after the introduction of the electronic scientific journals, the practices of collections development have undergone some reduction in the university libraries of the Information Science area, thus bringing different consequences for the collections and their handling.
