RESUMO

A new approach for software reliability modeling is proposed, entailing the use of variables indirectly related to software reliability as additional information for the modeling process. Existence of a strong relationship between software reliability and structural testing criteria coverage has been shown by empirical evidence, studies and experimental results. Three new software reliability models based on structural testing coverage are analyzed. Coverage data from a testing experiment were applied on the new models; these data are the results of using the All Nodes, All Ares, and Potential-Uses criteria in the experiment. The same data were applied on the main software reliability models, well known and widely used, to compare them against the new models. Results show a c1ear superiority of the new approach and point to a new direction concerning software reliability modeling, i.e., explore the use of variables indirectly related to reliability in the modeling process. The goal is to create models with a performance better than that of the traditional models. Existence of variables indirectly related to reliability other then structural coverage should be investigated. Different models as well as different criteria should be considered in this new approach. Additionally, the models presented must be used with coverage data from testing software of different characteristics to achieve a better evaluation of this usefulness
