RESUMO

The globalization is a phenomenon that affects all sorts of organizations, such organizations have different levels of international involvement. To test any theory that considers internationalization as an independent variable one need a reliable instrument to measure the relative globalization of companies. Based on a sample of the worlds 100 largest multinational companies collected in 2005 by the United Nations on Trade and Development - UNCTAD, a methodology to build an indicator of internationalization level of a company is developed in order to establish a globalization ranking. The estimator obtained, called GLB, is a zscore built up on nine surface attributes. Reliability and validity indicate that it supersedes some other indicators proposed in the literature. Strong factor structure with uniformly high communalities, several variables loadings strongly in the factor, explained variance above 74%, statistical and conceptual criteria attained, Cronbachs alpha far above the threshold where confirmed to data from 2003, 2004 and 2006 to the worlds 100 largest multinational companies and to the 100 largest companies from developing countries. Although globalization is a multidimensional concept, factor analysis identified a single factor to the informational set under scrutiny. The GLB is not proposed to be a definitive indicator; other variables are expected to complement or replace and likely load on additional factors, which could reveal other aspects of domain. A more creative use of archival data could help in this direction.
