RESUMO

The increase of the production of steels through continuous casting machines requires long ladle sequences without interruption; if this condition is achieved it brings out stability and safeness and also reduction of operational cost. Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão (CST) arrival at the hot rolled coil market is demanding flexibility to supply small tonnages of a variety of steel grades. Thus in order to accomplish this objective without increasing the operational costs it has become necessary to cast different grades of steel at the same sequential without tundish changes. The objective of this project is to study the alternatives that would make possible the mixture of steels in the tundish but minimizing the losses due to downgrading the slabs. Both physical and mathematical modeling are to be used in order to evaluate the influence of variables such as: geometry of the tundish, flow obstacles, presence of turbulence inhibitors, depth of ladle valve, weight of steel in the tundish, stopper rod etc. It is intended to study the influence of these parameters on the mixing zone, both in a qualitative and quantitative way. With a mathematical model for intermixing, it was possible to study continuous casting variables effects in length slabs mixing. The tundish weight was more important for minimum mixing. The tundish weight has to be the minimum possible, however without allow the pass of slag from tundish to mold.
