RESUMO

It was intended to analise the viability of using mathematical models, to explain the behaviour of the diffusional solid-liquid extraction in a counter-courrent, multistage process equipment, for the desing of industrial extractors. The concepts related with "Sustained Development" and "Integrated Systems for Food and Energy Production" were the initial marks for the development of this research. Based on bibliography review of theoretical basis of diffusional extraction process, the factors that influence the process, kinds of equipments and some models that describe the extraction process, the method proposed by Sehwartzberg and Desai is considered as the most interesting model. These authors considered a dependency of the fraction of solute separated from the matrix in relation with stages. A problem of explanation in this methodology make us to propose and alternative method of calculation, that sees the whole process as somatory of inter-independent stages. For the verification of the validity of the two models were elaborated two computer programs that simulate the behaviour of the extraction process and lets do the comparation between the concentration profile obtained by the computer simulation and the experimental profile obtained with a pilot plant extractor (Kennedy type). The results of the studies carried out to show the variation of the extraction yield with different values of two variables: the liquid-solid relation (α) and the number of Fick. evidences the possibility of using both methods as design tool in process equipment calculation. The alternative model showed to be the most adequate for development a method to analise the dimension of multi-stage extractors in a counter -courrent.
