RESUMO

The Family Health Program (FHP) is not an additional strategy in the organization of services, but rather a substitute proposal for rearrangement of the basic health care model. This strategy aims to meet the principles of the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS), addressing health in a universal, holistic and equitable manner, including community participation. Moreover, it addresses the family and not only the individual, in its physical and social environment, within its community and actual family life, thereby facilitating the understanding on the health-disease process aiming at health education and consequently at self-care in general and oral health. The theoretical basis of PSF and the working context of the Oral Health Teams (ESB) favor the interaction with the family and community. The activities developed (epidemiological surveillance, home visits, pediatrics and orientation on health care and factors interfering with quality of life) are opportune for working with the family. Planning and scheduling activities adequate to the local reality may guide and improve the actions developed by the entire Family Health Team (ESF). This study aimed to characterize the establishment of ESB in PSF at the city of Maringá, Brazil, since planning of its organization, training, local planning, activities developed, up to home care. This report on the experience of the city and Team 33 of the Basic Health Unit (UBS) Iguaçu aims to guide the professionals (ESB) working with the PSF in the future, so that they may be aware of what is feasible and may be proposed and performed within a multiprofessional team. The report also intends to guide the dental professionals, who may present working proposals in the different activities of the ESF. In conclusion, clear goals and objectives are necessary for development of a multiprofessional work. Training is necessary for planning and interpersonal relationship, as well as on theoretical-practical methods to be adopted by professionals. Dentistry in an ESB has much to contribute with ESF to provide education, information, prevention and specific care to the communities.
