RESUMO

The objective of this work is to accomplish a discussion regarding the metropolis, metropolitan areas and the metropolization process as consequences of the urbanization, and to understand the metropolitan issue in Brazil and the creation of the Metropolitan Area of Londrina. The 1988 Constitution allowed the Federation States to create metropolitan areas throughout their own legislation, causing a great increase of these regional units in a short period of time without a concern about the theoretical precision of the theme by legislators. The choice of the municipalities that comprise the Metropolitan Area of Londrina indicates that the urban-regional reality was not embraced, for cities that have a less intense metropolitan relationship with the nucleus city were included, while others with a more intense relationship with Londrina were not.
