RESUMO

The safety of patients and users, the quality in the service and a higher availability of medical equipment are goals and constant worries in health institutions. Programs of preventive maintenance contribute to achieve these targets, but the inclusion of all equipment becomes financially not viable for the institution. 50 it is necessary to develop a way establishing the priority for inclusion of equipments in as such programs. Many authors (Hertz, 1990; Anderson, 1992; Kendall et aI., 1993; Gullikson, 1995; Capuano &Koritko, 1996; Wang, 2000 among others) have developed criteria of priority for equipments in American hospitals. The first approach published, and also the most cited in the literature, is Fennigkoh &Smith s inclusion criteria (1989); this criteria attributed quantitative values to the following factors: risk, function of the equipment and recommendations for maintenance. However, the application of those parameters in Brazilian hospitals can cause an inadequate equipment inclusion or exclusions due to cultural differences between the clinical engineering practices in Brazil and in the USA. This was already observed by several Brazilian authors (Martins et aI., 1990; Ramírez &Calil, 1996; Lucatelli, 1998). In that sense, it is necessary to define other parameters to allow the refinement for the criteria of inclusions and to adapt it to the needs of the Brazilian hospitals. This work analyses the criteria so far utilized and suggests new ones, focusing in the importance of the equipment inside the global mission of the hospital (Wang, 2000); rate of utilization of the equipment; rate of fails; mantenability; costs with maintenance; and others; beyond the classics already mentioned. All these parameters were included in a decision flowchart, intending to determine intervals of PM that best fit in the Brazilian s reality
