RESUMO

Nearly four years ago, two experimental cover systems of the evapotranspirative type, have been designed and built in Rio Paracatu Mineração (RPM), Paracatu, Minas Gerais (Amorim, 2008). One cover system was made with a hydraulic barrier layer and the other with a capillary barrier layer, both with monitoring systems consisting of a runoff meter, lysimeters to measure infiltration and geotechnical instrumentation to monitor volumetric water content and suction in the different soil layers. These experiments were carried out at the mine site, in a region called "Barraginha," that served as reservoir to receive the tailings during the operation of the pilot plant of the mine. This thesis dealt with numerical analyses, made by the finite element method using the program VADOSE/W, of the two cover systems. Initially, it was necessary to calibrate in the field both the water content and the suction meters, to verify the calibration previously made in the laboratory by Amorim (2008). The numerical study was carried out during a period of approximately three years with one and two-dimensional models of the covers. Preliminarily, parametric analyses were made to check the influence of some model parameters whose values were uncertain. Next, the numerical results were compared with those obtained in the field. These comparisons indicate good agreement between the results, both with the one and two-dimensional models of the cover systems. Finally, based on the results obtained, a methodology for the design of cover systems made with soil is presented.
