RESUMO

The Catholic Church, throughout its history, has outlined projects that enable the maintenance of its political, cultural and economic power. Among its actions, there is the formation of intellectuals, whose goal is to defend the ideals of this institution. Since the nineteenth century, the Church has been concerned with the formation of a conservative Catholicism in Brazil, which aimed to undermine a popular Catholicism that was being formed here. One of the practices adopted by the Catholic Church discussed the creation of numerous school groups and seminars around the country. It is necessary to disseminate and understand that the studies of socio-cultural aspects are just as important as any other element, to understand and interpret the historic achievement of geographical space. Thus, this paper attempts to combine the themes of religion, space and education, involving the Catholic Church instructional actions, acting as a (re) producer agent of certain social conditions, as it appropriates, arranges, produces and reproduces space around its area. With the main aim of analyzing the space conformance of Messejana through the installation of confessional schools, we sought the understanding of the socio-cultural role played by these educational institutions in that district. Throughout its history, Messejana was strongly guided by the Catholic religion which makes its presence from the Jesuit period. One of the major milestones of the District is its centenary Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, around which New York increased. The role of the Catholic Church reflects on the organization of the space as a social agent (much more efficient) able to interfere in the production and consumption of such space. Indeed, the study of the religion and history of education in Ceará will be the theoretical basis for asserting the transformative potential of this agent producer of space.
