RESUMO

The aim of this research was to study the socio-demographic characteristics, obesity, the distribution pattern of body fat and the factors related to the presence of obesity and the android pattern of fat distribution and to discover the variables associated with the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in menopausal women. An observational cross-section study was carried out on 518 patients, between 45 and 65 years old, attending the Climacteric Out-Patients Cllnic of the Hospital Celso Pierro of the Medical Faculty of the Catholic University of Campinas, from 15tOctober 1997 to the 15th October 1998. The characteristics of the population were studied, taking into a ccount the body mass rate, the relation of the measurements of the circumference of the waist and hips which define obesity, and the pattern of fat distribution, as dependent variables in the first stage of the analysis. The women are characterized as obese or not obese and the profile is categorized as either gynacoid ar android. Age, color, menopausal status, duration of menopause, lifestyle and habits are assessed; personal and family antecedents with a predisposition to cardiovascular disease are considered to be independent variables. In the second.stage, the body mass rate and the pattern of fat distribution were defined as independent variables in relation to the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, considered dependent variables
