RESUMO

In the 70s, acme of a military dictatorship in Brazil, the federal government decided to dam the SÃo Francisco River at Sobradinho, 40 km upriver from the twin cities of Juazeiro (Bahia) and Petrolina (Pernambuco), to regulate the river flow, especially to secure an year-round water supply to the Paulo Afonso hidroeletric plant. Due to the increased demand for electrical power in the brazilian northeast, a decision was made to eventually convert Sobradinho into a hidroeletric plant. As consequence, 72,000 people were relocated compulsorily, 80% of which were squatters who praticed subsistence agriculture on the fertile banks and islands of the SÃo Francisco River; and on farms and settlements, during the rainy season. This work examines and discusses how the collective memory of these events influence the reorganization of the present lives of this population whose remnants inhabit the Quixaba settlement at the edge of Lake Sobradinho. This work considers that the memory of the displaced population is produced collectively in daily social practices and intercourse, in counsel and interviews that are precious contributions to these memories and to the inventiveness and adjustments that were required for the adaptation and survival of this community
