RESUMO

The characterization of an anaerobic sludge sample and the efects of pH, concentration of solids and ionic strength on interactions between metal and sludge have been described. The conditional stability constants (K ) and the total concentration of ligands (Lt) were obtained by Scatchard two-ligands model at different pH values. Dissolved copper, ionic copper and absorbed copper concentration were determined by Diferential Pulse Anodic Stripping (DPASV), Electrode (IES), respectively. A fraction of only 1 % of total copper can be absorbed when its concentration is 100 mg L-1 , while 90 to 95% of the total metal can be absorbed when its concentration is 500 mg L -1 and 1000 mg L-1 are employed. The fraction of ionic copper increases as the ionic strength is increased. Copper remains in the ionic form in pH 2 and 3. Complexation capacity increases frem 0.9 to 7.4 J.1I11ol L-1 when the pH is increased from 3 to 4, which agrees with the observed pHzpc of 3.5. These results indicate that adsorption is predominant interaction process between copper and sludge
