RESUMO

This thesis aims at identifying how some contemporary fictional works reflect conceptions on the subjectivity of our time through variations in the form of the so-called ?representation of the unreality,? conceived as narratives in which plot leads the main characters as well as the readers not to perceive that the presented fictional world is an illusion and that another reality lies beneath appearance. In this sense, the motion pictures The Matrix and Mulholland Drive are analyzed based on Umberto Ecos textual semiotics. As a result, The Matrix is revealed as a naive representation of the borders between reality and unreality, showing a duality that contrasts with the ideals of the blurring of boundaries of the postmodern era. With the aid of psychoanalytic theory, we verified that Mulholland Drive is comparatively more complex, by establishing a relationship between subjectivity and unreality based on desire.
