RESUMO

A cohort study was carried out between April 2002 and July 2003, covering a sample of 170 mothers and their offspring with birth weight between 1500 and 2500 grams, covered by the Brazilian Health System (SUS). All children were born and living in the county of Campinas. The sample was selected in the largest obstetric hospital in town, which historically have the largest number of low birth weight deliveries (Maternidade de Campinas and Centro de Atenção Integral à Saúde da Mulher ? CAISM). Data was gathered in two moments: right after the birth and at home four months later. Interviews were carried by trained staff, using validated instrument (questionnaire). Data analysis included the growth rate by weight increase over each child as dependent variable. Independent variables were studied through crosstabs, estimates of relative risk with proper confidence interval (95%). Chi-square was employed to evaluate the significance of results in crosstabulation. A multivariate analysis model was used to determine strength of associations between the dependent and independent variables. Most important identified risk factors associated with growth below the average were: unwanted pregnancy (OR=2,35; p=0,1015); sewage inadequate (OR=4,03; p=0,014) and being and being female (OR=3,36; p=0,005). According to the results, we can conclude that the above mentioned maternal characteristics do affect the growth of low birth weight children. These results show that a larger period of follow-up is necessary to avaluate the association between this studied variables and the growth of low birth weight children
