RESUMO

This study aimed at the multitemporal mapping of land cover and land use in the municipality of Manoel Urbano - AC, using Landsat TM images between 1987 and 2007 and demarcation and measurement of Permanent Preservation Areas. Procedures for processing, interpretation, classification, map generation and quality assessment of products generated were carried out using the ERDAS / IMAGINE 8.5 software (Data Analysis System and Resources of the Earth). Automatic demarcation of Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) was carried out based on the Brazilian Forest Code and CONAMAs Resolution No 303. The main results were: land use mapping in which 4 classes were established; Ombrophilous Forest with Bamboo, Ombrophilous Dense Forest, deforestation and water bodies. Ombrophilous Forest with Bamboo covered an area of 692,153 ha (65.07%), followed by Dense Ombrophilous Forest with 343,359 ha (32.28%), deforestation with 23.013 ha (2.16%) and water bodies 5175 ha (0.49%), demarcation of PPAs located in area surrounding the springs, around the lakes, banks of water courses, upper third of hills and along the drainage divide and the upper third of sub-basins. PPAs that occupied the largest areas were those along the drainage divide in the upper third of sub- basins, with an area of 51,883.42 ha (47.2%) of total PPA s mapped, followed by PPA s banks of water courses, with an area of 40,604.15 ha (39.94%). PPA s that occupied the smallest areas were the springs with 191.67 ha (0.17%) and lakes with 490.77 ha (0.45%). Moreover, it was found that PPA s corresponded to 109.918.15 ha (10.33%) of the municipalitys total area, as a result of the study area to be in a rather flat land. It was concluded that along the evaluated twenty years, deforestation took place slowly compared to other regions in the Amazon, especially when assessing on total deforested area. Occupation occurred around the center of the municipality, accessible areas using the BR 364 road, sideways built with the support of the municipality, state of Acre and INCRA, as well as along the Purus River. The main economic activities were: extraction of timber and non-timber forest products and extensive livestock production.
