RESUMO

Representing the geographical space by means of maps and charts is an essential tool for spatial development, planning, management and ordering. Thus, geomorphological mapping framework seeks to identify, limit and establish dynamic interactions amongst geomorphological units that occur in a given sector of the Earth surface. Based on these considerations, designing geomorphological compartments becomes particularly relevant to conducting detailed assessments of landforms dissection patterns, the main pursuit of this study. In order to quantify dissection indexes the following parameters were adopted according to the level of valley entrenchment as a response to external sculptural agents interacting with local morphostructural settings. Landform units were spatially identified and delimited based on Belo Jardim topographic map at 1: 100.000, which comprises the following municipalities: Toritama, Brejo da Madre de Deus, Belo Jardim, SÃo Caitano, Cachoeirinha, and Altinho, all of them located in the âagresteâ region of the State of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. Geological maps, Landsat 7 images and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) were also used, rendenring a final map at 1: 100.000, and a contour interval of 10 m.The theoretical model used in order to designate the landforms was adapted from Ross (1992) proposal and permitted the identification of several geo-units based on the definition of morphosculptural and morphostructural patterns to area, the last one varying from alluvial plains to the large sets of crystalline massifs
