RESUMO
Investigations show the paratrigeminal nucleus (Pa5) as an input site for sensory information from the facial, median and sciatic nerves fields. This study aimed at determining the facial, median and sciatic nerve projections to the dorsal lateral medulla and compared the topographical distribution of the input sites of these nerves to that of nuclear c-Fos protein expression produced by nociceptive stimulation applied to regions of their respective innervation field. Different regions of the paratrigeminal nucleus displayed fluorescent immunolabeling of biocytin that was microinjected in the facial, median or sciatic nerves, respectively 48, 96 or 240 hours of post administration survival periods. The highest intensity labeling was observed in the ipsilateral side of the facial nerve tract-tracer application followed by that of the contralateral sides to the fore- and hind paw applications to the median and sciatic nerve respectively. The lateral reticular nucleus showed fluorescent labeled terminal fibers on day 12 and 14, after tracer injection to contralateral sciatic nerve. Saline injections to the hind paw, forepaw and facial, forepaw and hind paw regions labeled paratrigeminal neurons following identical topographical distribution to that of formalin administration to the respective orofacial and plantar regions however the number of labeled neurons was 80 and 70%, of that caused by forepaw and hind paw formalin applications, respectively. Therefore, the paratrigeminal nucleus may be considered one of the first sites in the brain for sensory/nociceptive inputs from the sciatic, median and facial nerves. Also, the findings include the paratrigeminal nucleus in the neural pathway of the somatosympathetic pressor response to SNS and nocifensive responses to hind paw, forepaw and facial stimulation.
