RESUMO

This work aims to rescue works for clarinet by Bahias band directors and to study the pieces Serenata Anthenorina for clarinet and piano and Variações Requinta Concertante for Eb clarinet and band, both written by Manuel Tranquillino Bastos, through a descriptive, analitical and historical approach. Manuel Tranquillino Bastos was born in Cachoeira-Bahia, on October 8, 1850, and died in the same city on March 12, 1935. He was a very important and prolific composer who was born at the core of the tradition of the Bahias professionals and amateur bands. The bands started out oficially with the oficial advent of the military bands, on August 20, 1808, during the colonial period in Brazil. These amateur bands were cultural centers for music education and citizenship, besides of being important laboratories of the different tendencies of what took place in the Brazilian and world musical scenario. Tranquillino lived in a period of great intensity of bandas musical activities, the end of XIX century and beginning of the XX. This can be confirmed by the high number of bands that there were in Bahia during this period, being the Bahian Recôncavo, the center of these groups. In the appendices of the work, there are lists relating the pieces founded in the archives and collections during the research conduction. They included also the scores editions of the compositions studied in this work. Manuel Tranquillino Bastos left to the posterity a significative collection musical production. It is necessary to study the work of this composer, as well as other composers from the band tradition.
