RESUMO

This work presents the results of the evaluation of the respiratory function of obese women eligible to bariatric surgery. For a better groundwork, it is initially presented an introduction about obesity epidemiology and etiology, its different kinds and patterns of classification and how its inserted worldwide and in Brazil. The main associated pathologies are also mentioned, emphasizing the respiratory function. Afterward several treatment forms currently applied are rolled, with special attention to bariatric surgery, since the pre-operating phase until the most common pos-operating respiratory complications. Before showing the results of the research, it s described the evaluation techniques and the applied methodology. The results are presented in descriptive and analytic ways, with special emphasis on muscular respiratory strength and pulmonary volumes. The discussion is based on the comparison between the achieved results and existing bibliographical data about no obese individuals. It can be verified that obese women present significant differences in their vital capacity and tidal volume, while muscular strength remains unaltered. It was also possible to propose new indicators to appraise pulmonary values to that population. The author finishes her study proposing the pre-operating physiotherapeutic preparation of that patients and the consolidation of the physiotherapist presence in the bariatric surgery multidisciplinary team.
