RESUMO

The underage children involved in divorce processes almost increased five times in the last two decades in Brazil. It shows a new and growing family reality for the family members. The stepfamilies, even the ones that are not legalized, have a huge growing rate in Brazil. Thus, many children and adolescents will live with a stepfather or stepmother and probably with their stepbrother or halfbrother. This study investigated the divorced parents childrens experiences concerning the family transitions about the mothers second wedding. The childrens experiences, the meaning of their actions and interactions during the family transition and after it were investigated. It was a descriptive-qualitative research involving ten children (six girls and four boys), from 7 to 13 years old, living in three different cities in São Paulo state. A semi structured interview was made with every single child. The study conclusions are similar to what has been reported in literature: there are many different family arrangements, there are many changes and some losses on childrens life and the need to adjust them on their daily routine. These changes were felt by the children as moving too fast and without the clear explanations and foreseeability. Besides, children need some time to elaborate the new member entrance and, sometimes, the new brother. Even though, children described that their mother was happier and much better on her new wedding.
