RESUMO

Part of a generation for whom nothing seemed to matter after the sixtiesâ revolution and the contracultural desbunde of the eighties, the writer Caio Fernando Abreu is considered by national literary critics a spokesperson of his time, devoted to the definition of âgestures, conversations that, in pieces, started to trace a panel of the history of a generationâs life momentâ (HOLLANDA, 1982). His confessional literature, considered sometimes hard, dense and grotesque, dialogues in the same measure with pop culture, queer humor and homoeroticism. These and other qualities are a recurring presence in Abreuâs writings, which use constantly different instances to compose a personal literary scenery, in which word and image mix and complete themselves. Encompassing all these aspects, our interest here is to analyze, from the trails left by Caio Fernando Abreu, his oeuvre as an aesthetic ambience built from ambiguities; simultaneously, part and reflection of its time. As the object of our analysis, we choose not to analyze his texts per se, instead, we select three cinematographic adaptations from highly influential texts from the eighties: Aqueles dois, Sargento Garcia and Dama da noite. In the first part of our research, we place the national scenario of Caio Fernando Abreuâs generation, when Brazil passed through series of political, economical and cultural changes and saw the birth of a new editorial market directed to the youth, highly marked and influenced by pop culture. After that, we map certain concepts related to contemporary theory, presenting a brief panorama of post-modernism and the constitution of a mediatic ambience derived from the so called âend of the Great Divideâ. In the second part, we bring series of essays in which we analyze the three films that form our corpus, discussing the main ambiguities found in the texts by Caio Fernando Abreu
