RESUMO

This work analyses the determinants of firm performance in their industries comparing two distinctive theoretical perspectives: the first, based on Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCD) paradigm, and the second based on firm capabilities and the competitive strategies. One group of empirical models test the hypothesis from ECD paradigm and another group test the relevance of Schumpeterian arguments and other theoretical insights related to the firm capabilities and competitive strategies. To test the econometric models it was used a database from IBGE/PINTEC and IBGE/PIA-EMPRESAS, with 106 industries and 5,014 firms for the period 2000. The main results show the relevance of technological innovation, international trade, economies of scale and scope as determinants of profit asymmetries among firms of an industry over the industrial structural aspects, like concentration.
