RESUMO

This study aims to investigate Brazil?s Positivist Church educational proposals between 1870 and 1930. The anthology of Brazil?s Positivist Church in Rio de Janeiro holds a vast amount of documents on the Positive Church?s political platform of Miguel Lemos (1845?1917), and Teixeira Mendes (1855?1927) administrators of the positivist Church. On these documents orthodox perspective of the positivism is registered. The adopted methodology is based in historical research based on primary sources such as pamphlets and press releases published by the Positivist Church of Brazil. Examining these sources we concluded that political institution reform was one of the main flags of the positivists, where education was given the task of form new mind and character habits, disseminating new moral and intellectual standards aiming the building of national unity enveloping the republican project. The understanding on the material production process of the educational proposals of the Positivist Church of Brazil expressed a more wide-ranging project shaped by the political and economic movement that took place late in the 19th century and scored the middle class as hegemonic. Positivism exacerbate the technique, science, middle class order, and myths, among them the thought that it is through education that transformation would take place. The faith in this institution and the middle class school generalization process did not have as objective to liberate the working class of its social condition but keep it under its domain based on principles that qualify the new school, that is, as public, universal, lay, mandatory, and free for all. This process gained peculiar characteristics in each country. In Brazil, it also gained its singularity, but it was articulated to movement of ideas and capitalism globalization during its imperialist phase. Brazil?s Positivist Church theoretical elaborations and political actions were not an isolated process, but comprised an expression of the middle class thought. The national system education organization in Europe imposed itself as a demand of the Industrial Revolution and the church being the speaker of this process. The Positivist Church possessed a set of educational proposals to be sent to the Brazilian society so that it would interfere in the directions and actions of educational questions, attached to the anti-revolutionary idea, facing the threats to the middle class from the working class. Positivism consisted in one of the philosophical fundaments of the republican idea attributing to education, especially to schools, the role of instrument of action in the process of Brazil Republican social and political organization. When presented as an innovating thought, late in the XIX century, positivism constituted in a conservative-moderate idea facing tension among social classes.
