RESUMO

Literature, because it contains human relations, it is also, a depository of spaces. The reader, an omnipresent being in the book that is being read, exposes himself not only to the reality present in the book, but also to the associations that the story awakes in regard to his own experiences and life. When reading the book Memorial de Maria Moura (MMM), by Brazilian writer Rachel de Queiroz, we perceived on the scene that the main character hugs the wall of her house saying good-bye to it, the environmental issues contained in this book. In such way, this study constitutes a literary nalysis mphasized on the people-environment relation contained in the book. As focus, were analyzed only the passages of Maria Moura and her relation with the environments present in her life. In such relation, were identified some concepts of Environment Psychology, branch of Psychology that studies the people-environment relations. Among the concepts found, the ones chosen to be studied in this research were territoriality, appropriation and place attachment. Furthermore, as key-elements to the studies in this area, were discussed in this analysis the Assumptions of Environmental Psychology. This research also had as goal to bring light to the possibilities of eopleenvironment tudies present in Literature. In MMM, the presence of the environments holds such trength that the story of this title-character can be told through them. They are so present in the story that they can also be considered as characters. When analyzing Maria Moura and her spaces, it was perceived that in literary works the author s slow and crescent creation of the context and the access to the intimacy of the characters allows us to observe the construction of the people-environment relation, the formation of attachments to the places, as well as their symbologies and reasons.
