RESUMO

The process of aging leaves individuais very susceptible and vulnerable to diseases and makes them potential users of hospital services. In Brazil, there is a tendency to underestimate the patient s potential regarding self-care during hospitalization, especially in the case of the elderly. This attitude favors discontinuity of the treatment at home and results in an increased risk of repeated hospitalizations. Self-care is fundamental for maintaining health, independence and autonomy in the case of patients who suffer from vasculopathies and have a history of repeated hospitalizations. The purpose of this study was to detect and analyze the limitations of self-care regarding these aged patients. This research study was conducted on six elderly patients who were above the age of 60 years, suffered frem vasculopathies, had a history of repeated hospitalizations and during the study were hospitalizedin the ClinicalVascular Infirmaryof a Universityhospital.A spec~ficindividual interview was used to collect data. The analysis was performed in two phases that complemented each other. The first phase identified and analyzed limitations for self-care according to Dorothea E. Orem s Theory of Self-care. The Discourse Analysis, in a French perspective, was used to analyze the data during the second phase. The results demonstrated that the conditions for discourse production related to a discussion on health by the elderly determined the appearance of limitations that impeded effectiveself-care. These limitations were found to result from an absence of interlocution between the patient and health professionals, and his own body. Self-care is made impossible because this gap created by a lack of interlocution is filled with doubts and insecurity conceming the patient s body, medical care and prognosis
