RESUMO

The milk sector in Brazil is facing turbulent times. Changes in the industry are significantly affecting productivity resulting in a number of producers leaving the business. On the other hand, the volume of milk produced has increased, indicating that producers are finding ways to improve production and profitability in order to sustain their operations. The problems they face are occurring in other countries as well, and point to the issues that specifically impact big dairies with high productivity and high concentrations of animals. The production of manure in high ratios and the challenges of handling and disposal of this material become of critical importance. The State of São Paulo has the biggest number of large dairy farms in the country and is responsible for a significant part of the national production. The present study involves a survey conducted with 28 of the biggest farms of the State searching to characterize the alternatives used and the difficulties faced by the producers related to manure handling. A significant number of producers surveyed did not consider their methods for manure handling to be adequate and, in general, they opted to use more economic alternatives which are not always considerate of the environmental factors involved. This is confirmed by the observation that field application is, in general, the final manure destination and it is usually done without following the proper procedures.
