RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate mite numbers and species in house dust samples from different dwellings sites. A total of 58 homes in Campinas/SP was chosen. Samples were collected once from pantries, rugs (Iiving rooms and bedrooms), sofas, curtains (Iiving rooms and bedrooms) and upper and lower surfaces of mattresses, in the last also included the bed frames. A total of 368 dust samples was analyzed under optic microscope, in which 3,447 mites were counted. The main acarine suborder was Acaridide (n=2,605 mites; 75.6% of total mite number). In this suborder, the mainly acarine family was Pyroglyphidae (n=1,833; 53.2%), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus as the principal specie. Glycyphagidae was the second most prevalent acarine family observed (n=496; 14,4%). lower mattress surface and bed frame were the most important in-house site of mite infestation (n=1,808 mites; 52.4% of total mite number). Other important sites of mite infestation were upper mattress surface (12.7%) and sofas (11.0%)
