RESUMO

Optimum dosage of fluoride in public water supplies was defined by Dean (1941). However, this method was only made compulsory in Brazil in 1974, through the law No. 6.050. The aims of this study were: (I) to present a chronicle of the history of legislationon fluoridation in public water supplies in Brazil;(II) to verifythe knowledge of oral health coordinators about this legislation; and (III) to identify the difficulties encountered by such coordinators to obey the legislation. The history was studied using MEDLlNE, Lillacs, BBO and Lex. The knowledge was verified through a questionnaire; sample size was 23. The difficulties were identified through interviewing officials responsible for the department of dentistry and sanitary vigilance of DIR XV.Fischer test was used, with ?INFINITO?=0.05 and the proportion test between correct answers/wrong answers for two groups. Although 87% answered that there is a law about fluoridation of public water supplies and 69,9% answered it must be compulsory, only 34,8% said they had read the legislation. Only 21,7% knew that the fiscalization of fluoride ion in the water must be made by sanitary supervision and only 43,5% knew the correct optimum level of fluoride ion in water supplies. It was verified that there was no association between the fact that an oral health coordinators stated that he or she had read the legislation and correct answers to questions about who must supervise the ion fIuoride levei in the water supplies (p=0,30),about the optimum levei of fIuoride ion (p=0,69) and about the interference factor in this concentration (p=1,00). It was not obselVed a statistically significant difference in the evaluated questions to prove a greater knowledge of the group who had read the legislation (p=0,1808, p=0,6449 and p=0,8788, respectively). Results indicate an unsatisfactory knowledge about the questions. It would be important that oral health coordinators knew the legislation perfectly. Otherwise they will obviously be unable to demand the correct employment of the public health preventive measures and standards established in law
