RESUMO

This work concerns on the Renaissentist legacy that was transposed to urban shapes observed in urban building styles in SÃo LuÃs, MaranhÃo and BelÃm, ParÃ. Which can be identified though the urban elements found in these cities. Starting from these elements we intend to answer the following questions: was there an inicial and self characteristic conception related to Portuguese culture in SÃo LuÃs, MaranhÃo and BelÃm, ParÃ? What were the Portuguese urban elements applied in these two cities in the 17th century? To achieve that objective navious notions from Nestor Goulart, Luz Valente and Lamas, besides specialized bibliography based on the Renaissance . Also, reports of Portuguese and France history experts were researched, in order to find out about those who were here in the beggining of the colonization the accomplished interpretation, taking for base the comparative study with DamÃo, tries to show that in BelÃm and SÃo LuÃs cities there are a lot of likeness and few differences, allowing us to say that in the formation of those cities there was a common urban logic, in other words, a Renaissentist legacy
