RESUMO

Objectives: Interpreting the psychological meanings attributed for women to the death phenomenon of their babies before their birth, when the stillbirth was diagnosed before parturition. Subjects and Methods: Clinic-qualitative search realized with five women who lived the gestational loss diagnosed after 20 weeks of gestational age and they were interviewed in the Outpatient of Childbirth Review from CAISM ? Center for Integral Attention to Woman?s Health about 50 days after parturition. The participants? age varied between 18 and 42 years. The semi-structured interview with open questions was used as technique of data collection, because it is able to keep a deep contact between interviewer and interviewee. The technique of data treatment used was Qualitative Analyses of Content and it propitiated the data categorization from floating readings of the set of transcribing interviews. Results: In the stillbirth diagnose the women report the occurrence of several simultaneous emotions. The parturition is described like sad and frustrating. After seeing the body baby, it occurs the recognition of the child while person pertaining to her familiar group. At home, the absence of the baby is felt daily, in the contact with child?s belongs, with the family, with the friends. Incapacity, shame and incredulity feelings in relation to future are highlighted. The difficulty in the relationship with pregnancy women and babies is emphasized, because such contact brings their absence baby remembrance. Conclusions: The woman who lives the loss of a child before her birth needs to express and feel her pains to reorganize herself emotionally, since the negation of such feelings make impossible the adequate elaboration of sorrow. For this reason, the contact with the reality must be facilitated through of a space to the feeling expressions. In the health care institutions this can be facilitated by multiprofessional team as a therapeutic and preventive measure. Key words: postpartum period, qualitative research, bereavement
