RESUMO

This paper analyzes the impact of the economic crisis on the dynamics of Mexican migration to the United States of America. Contrary to mainstream arguments, the main issue is not so much the emergence of a mass return flow, as a virtual slowdown in the growth of the Mexican population in the country. On one hand, despite the increase in the return of Mexicans, the same levels and trends as those reported in the 1990s are still maintained. On the other hand, since 2007 the crisis has led to a reduction of almost 60% in annual emigration flow, balancing out the exit and return flows of Mexicans. This situation marks a change in the experience lived by the migrants since the 1970s.
