RESUMO

Summary The article analyzes the main characteristics of the Argentine immigration and colonization law of 1876 and the discussions that took place during its treatment in the National Congress. The relations between this law and Argentina’s policies during the second half of the nineteenth century on immigration are explained, as well as the gradual untying of the latter with respect to colonization policies. In the last part, an overall assessment of these policies is made, comparing them with those of some neighboring countries at the time
